The Importance of ME Time
How many times recently have people asked you to be selfish?
I guess not many (if any), but that’s what I’m asking you to be today and over the coming weeks.
Now I’m not suggesting you order others around on a whim, but take the chance to stop and think about yourself for a change. Circumstances around us will always conspire to force us down the ‘hamster wheel’ route, most of the time without us realising it.
Let me give you an example: normally when we start in the world of work we expect to be there between nine and five. It’s traditional. However if you’re good at what you do it soon becomes eight till six, then seven till seven (sounding familiar?) and if you’re really really good you’re given a blackberry to work on over the weekend!
Is this ringing an alarm bell in the deep recesses of your mind?
Does this modern day slavery make us better at what we do or is it a case of just ‘going with the flow’. After all, don’t all our colleagues do the same thing?
And then one day in a few years’ time, you look up and your career has gone past in a flash. You start to regret all those things you planned to do but didn’t quite get around to and now the risk of change becomes far too great. You take the easy route and just keep our heads down, pop the dreams back in their box and the days roll on. It might seem like a bleak picture but sadly over the years I have met many people who have done just this.
One of the saddest expressions I hear is ‘I wish I had’….
So perhaps, right now, right here, I can help you make a difference?Jon’s solution – Have a coffee and a conversation! Not with anyone else though – have a coffee and an honest conversation with yourself.Take a little ME time to discuss what makes you tick. What brings you alive and lights you up. Then ask the tough question ‘am I bringing my ‘real’ self to work’?Today might be the day to stop and smell the roses. It’s time to be selfish for all the right reasons – because the chances are that you’re selfishness in this case may benefit everyone around you.
